Here’s our current ranking of the best cookies in NYC, six bakeries in, updated as we find more.
🍪 6. Insomnia Cookies @insomniacookies
📍 283 Bleecker St, New York, NY 10014, plus locations citywide
🕐 Mon–Wed 11 AM – 1 AM · Thu–Sat until 3 AM · Sun until 1 AM
💵 ~$3 · Get: the classic chocolate chunk, warm
🔗 insomniacookies.com
Doughy & soft. Smaller than others, so perfect for a quick sweet pick-me-up. The real advantage is the hours: almost nothing else good is open at 2 AM.
🍪 5. Chip City Cookies @chipcitycookies
📍 272 7th Ave, New York, NY 10001 (Chelsea), plus locations citywide
🕐 Daily, 11:00 AM – 12:00 AM
💵 ~$4–5 · Get: whatever’s on the weekly rotation, or the classic
🔗 chipcitycookies.com
Thick, soft, with big chocolate chunks. The rotating menu is the real draw, there’s usually something worth a detour. Grab-and-go, no seating.
🍪 4. Culture Espresso @cultureespresso
📍 72 W 38th St, New York, NY 10018
🕐 Daily, 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
💵 ~$6.50 · Get: the chocolate chip, fresh from the oven
🔗 cultureespresso.com
Crispy on the outside, soft inside. Has that a gourmet, homemade feel (in a good way!) so this is for you if you’re a traditional kinda person. Time your visit to a fresh batch if you can.
🍪 3. Levain Bakery @levainbakery
📍 351 Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY 10024
🕐 Daily, 7:00 AM – 10:00 PM
💵 ~$5.75 · Get: the dark chocolate chocolate chip
🔗 levainbakery.com
Very chocolatey (their version is double chocolate, so yeah). Perfect for chocolate lovers. DENSE. A crispy crust as you can see from the break. The Amsterdam Ave original still has the shortest morning line.
🍪 2. La Mercerie @lamercerieny
📍 53 Howard St, New York, NY 10013
🕐 Mon–Fri 11:30 AM – 10:00 PM · Sat–Sun 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM, 5:00 – 10:00 PM
💵 $$$ (it’s a restaurant, not a bakery counter) · Get: the hazelnut caramel sea salt cookie
🔗 lamercerieny.com
Hazelnut, caramel, sea salt. We may have cheated a little with this one as they use hazelnut flour, but it was too good to pass up! Velvety, soft luxury in your mouth. Worth knowing you’re sitting down in a full restaurant to get it. One thing to know: they only make a small batch of these every day, so if you’re there for the restaurant, mention it to your server when you order and they’ll set one aside for dessert.
🍪 1. Funny Face Bakery @funnyfacebakery
📍 319 Lafayette St, New York, NY 10012
🕐 Daily, 10:00 AM – 9:30 PM
💵 ~$6.50 · Get: the classic chocolate chip
🔗 funnyfacebakery.com
This had the best ratio of chocolate and dough for us. Soft but still holding its shape beautifully. Perfection ✨

How we tested
We made sure the cookies were warm and fresh when we filmed and tasted, bought in person, no delivery. We didn’t include any cookies we couldn’t get our hands on fresh. Tasted the same day where possible so texture and temperature are judged fairly against each other.
