Funny Face Bakery has two Manhattan locations: 319 Lafayette Street in NoHo and 6 Fulton Street in the Seaport, where the brand reopened in June 2021 after an earlier East Village storefront closed before the pandemic. It calls itself “the first pop-culture bakery in America,” built around hand-painted, celebrity-face sugar cookies alongside a smaller lineup of everyday flavors — including the chocolate chip that first put it on our radar.
We first wrote about Funny Face in 2024, when its chocolate chip took the top spot in our roundup of the best chocolate chip cookies in NYC. This is the fuller version: the story behind the shop, what’s on the menu, what we ordered, and what to get whether you’re there for a celebrity’s face or just a good cookie.
Who’s behind Funny Face Bakery?
Founder Sarah Silverman (no relation to the comedian) started out selling cupcakes in 2016 under the name Cupcake Market. Two weeks before opening, during that year’s presidential primary, she painted a batch of cookies with the candidates’ faces on them as a one-off stunt. They sold out the same day, and the requests didn’t stop — cupcakes became the side business, the face cookies became the bakery, and the shop was eventually renamed Funny Face.
The room
Both locations are built for a quick stop rather than a sit-down visit: grape-purple walls, a neon “hey sugar” sign, and, per the shop’s own description, a floor-length mirror meant for photographing your cookie — or yourself — on the way out. The window display alone does a lot of the marketing: rows of hanging heart cookies visible from the sidewalk, restyled for whatever’s on the calendar (Valentine’s Day, when we shot these, meant a wall of “Hottie” and “Bitch, You’re My Soulmate”). It reads more like a novelty shop than a café; the draw is the cookie case, not a place to linger.

Illustrated character & meme cookies — Funny Face’s bread and butter below the giant face cookies. Small (roughly hand-sized), fully illustrated designs: pop-culture references, pet portraits, NYC-themed jokes, birthday and thank-you designs. Roughly $11–$16 each, priced per design.
Custom & celebrity face cookies — the shop’s signature. Individually hand-painted, sized to cover most of a face, sketched by Silverman and painted in royal icing by her artists. Roughly $20–$35 depending on complexity, and can also be done from a customer’s own photo (a pet, a friend, a celebrity lookalike).
Everyday cookies — chocolate chip, oatmeal, s’mores, and rainbow crumbfetti, sold individually and priced like a standard bakery cookie (around $6).
The shop also sells cakes and other baked goods; we don’t have menu detail on those yet.
What we ordered
Chocolate chip. This is the cookie that put Funny Face at #1 in our best chocolate chip cookie roundup, ahead of Levain, La Mercerie, Chip City, Culture Espresso, and Insomnia Cookies. Our note at the time: a “perfect ratio of chocolate and dough,” soft, but “holding its shape beautifully.” We’ve also called the decorated version “so easy to get obsessed” with — cute enough to be a Valentine’s Day gift, good enough that the look isn’t doing all the work.
What to order at Funny Face Bakery
If you’re only getting one thing, get the chocolate chip — it’s the cookie that earned the shop a spot on our best-of list, not just the photogenic one. If you want something to give rather than eat on the spot, the illustrated character cookies hit a sweet spot: novelty without the custom-order wait, and a pet-portrait option if you want it personalized. If you’re there for the full bit, a hand-painted custom face cookie is the move for a birthday, a bachelorette, or roasting a friend — give the shop a few days’ notice rather than expecting same-day painting.

Is Funny Face Bakery worth it?
Yes, for two different reasons depending on why you’re going. As a novelty stop — a celebrity’s face on a cookie, a photo op, a genuinely funny gift — it delivers exactly what the name promises. But the real case for going back isn’t the gimmick: it’s a chocolate chip cookie good enough to beat out Levain and La Mercerie in our own taste test, sitting quietly next to the famous ones. Go for the bit, stay for the plain cookie.
